In her words
“I’m fascinated by the marks that both man and the elements leave on a wall, and by bringing in things we deem as opposites. My childhood in Gozo had a really big impact — the arid climate, the endless dry-stone walls. Despite their degradation, there was a solidity, a strength about them.”
“Because of the texture and the colour, you only get the full impact when you see the work in the flesh. That’s where you get the visceral connection between the viewer and the piece.”
— Miranda Donovan

Come closer.
London Art Exchange presents 20 works by Miranda Donovan, spanning antique book covers, reclaimed oak, board and canvas. Architectural surfaces, imagined figures and persistent vegetation bring different kinds of order into contact with the unpredictable.
Between Order and Chaos invites a slower encounter with these paintings: first as complete images, then as surfaces shaped by marks, layers and material. Come closer, and the familiar begins to change.

On book covers
Six works bring imagined figures onto leather covers from the 1910, eleventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The existing book surfaces become settings for a new cast of characters.

On reclaimed oak
Painted on sections of an old oak stable door, these six works place unusual figures within richly worked surroundings. Wood is an active presence beneath the image.

On board
The works on board move between urban façades and more abstract encounters with the figure. Across the group, surface and figure continually change their relationship.

On canvas
The two large canvases broaden the exhibition’s sense of place, bringing architectural passage into close contact with abundant growth.
